This morning dawned foggy and cool as I left Cambrian College. The way to Highway 17 proved to be rather circuitous. I felt like a rat in a maze as I threaded my way through a series of streets to once again begin the day's ride. serendipitously, I came across Sudbury's iconic symbol, the Big Nickel, perched on a hill just outside the Sudbury city limits, but just inside the Copper Cliff city limits. I couldn't pass it by so I did the detour to take some photos. The last time I saw the Big Nickel was in 1973, and I think it was in a different location. Some photos of the coin.

Explanation of the coin's symbolism.

Example of the tortured and folded rock in the area.

To the east of Spanish, ON, I passed a train heading west, so I stopped to take a video as it passed. It was the first time I was able to time it so well. Here is the link to the video on Youtube

It was almost 300 kilometres to Sault Ste. Marie so it was a straightforward ride to the border.  Along the way I caught several views of Lake Huron and Manitoulin Island. It was quite easy to find the entrance to the bridge but as I approached the two lane bridge, it was blocked by a stalled semi truck causing a slight delay. The height of the bridge crossing the St. Mary's River which joins Lake Superior and Lake Superior  allows one to get a good view of both lakes.

Clearing customs was a simple process and I was soon on Highway 28 westward. On the way I came across the sign that I originally quoted and which may be the reason that Facebook will not allow me to post my blog link. This is the sign and it might explain their actions. Nevertheless, I find it incongruous that someone would post a sign that is so crude and then justify it with a bible verse.

Highway 28 runs straight for more than 100 miles. At Munising it approaches Lake Superior and the air becomes noticeably cooler. Outside of Munising I arrived in a small town named Christmas which had a casino with the appropriate figure. I suspect that the reality is that instead of giving, Santa will mainly take from the clients of this establishment. Further on down the highway is Chocolate Township, so whoever named those places had a theme going.

On the ride to Marquette, Highway 28 runs along Lake Superior. If you have never seen it, It is difficult to comprehend the scale of this body of water. Today was a calm day, but I can imagine how wild it can be on the water when a gale arises. The story of the Edmund Fitzgerald is evidence of that.

Tonight I arranged my room for tomorrow night. As luck would have it, the nearest available rooms are in Grand Forks, ND, so I have an 800+ km ride ahead of me. The saving grace is that I will lessen the distance I will have to ride on subsequent days. Tomorrow will be a long day, but the roads shouldn't be too busy and with an early start, I should arrive at a resonable time.
