A Down Day

Yesterday and today find us restricted to our hotel room in Boise. The problems with Garry's bike has resulted in the unavoidable loss of two travelling days. The temperature on both days is well over 100F so there is no place we can go anyway.

Yesterday I briefly left the hotel to ride to Walmart to pick up more Powerade for our ride to Winnemucca as well as some snacks & food for lunch. Again, the heat was almost unbearable which leads me to believe that the ride south will a hard day.

Last evening we took an Uber to the Country Pride Restaurant. After dinner, Garry asked the server what they generally get paid. Her answer was six dollars per hour, so servers essentially live on their tips. I find that unconscionable with the cost of living. I didn't understand that so I have been giving a standard 15-18% tip. On a twenty dollar meal that is around $3.50. If it's a slow day a server will not take home enough to live on. The cost of meals doesn't seem to reflect the low wages paid to servers.

So, today, we spent most of the day at the hotel because it was too hot to go outside and there is nothing within walking distance.

Garry's bike was in the shop having a variety of bits and pieces repaired. On the way from Lewiston, his bike had electrical issues that had to be repaired. The voltage regulator and stator had failed and needed to be replaced. In addition there had to be further diagnoses to ensure that there had been no further damage to the electrical system. It was also necessary to replace his front tire. A lot of work was done in a short time. With the cost of parts and labour, the bill came to CDN$3000. But it should run well now.

The plan for Friday was to leave early and get some miles under our wheels before the temperature became too hot before we were able to reach Winnemucca. It will be good to get back on the road.
